Uninstalled unnecessary programs 4. Upgraded to sp2 5. Defragged 6. Switched to Firefox What else can I do? Nov 30, 55, 5, Use classic theme Add more ram but don't tell her. This is the option I would choose.

Make up a story about why the computer's now faster. I found a loose stick of ram in the box, I disabled the server module, I replaced the turbo jumper on the mb Dec 31, 9, 93 Sneak a couple mb sticks in there when she's not looking?

I hate to say it, there's not much more you can do really. Looks like you've covered all the usual bases. Unless you think there's a hardware or software glitch somewhere, I don't see what else you can do. VirtualLarry No Lifer. Aug 25, 52, 7, XP alone is sluggish on MB, nevermind Firefox. Firefox is an absolutely huge memory hog. Mine is using 1. I would point-blank ask her why she likes to waste time on a slow computer? Ask her if she drives at 10 mph on purpose all the time.

And if she doesn't, ask her why not, and then try to apply that analogy to the computer. Then, the year-old tinkerer gradually reduced the amount of RAM committed to the virtual machine and looked at whether Windows was able to boot and make it to the desktop.

Lowering that even further to MB resulted in a glorious blue screen. Interestingly, this was achieved without disabling services or "streamlining" the installation of Windows 10 used in the experiment. Some of you may have fond memories of tinkering with nLite to remove components from Windows XP or vLite to do the same to Vista, which had an insane memory footprint for the time it was launched, but could be reduced to allow systems with MB of RAM to run just fine -- albeit with a lot of Windows components removed and using the classic interface.

Still, a real system like this would hardly be usable as the only things Nori was able to run was the task manager, command prompt, and file explorer, and slower than any of us would be able to bear.

Booting Windows 10 with a low amount of RAM took several minutes, which is also far from ideal. But just like trying to run Windows 95 on the Apple Watch or an alternative smartwatch , geeks can't resist the temptation to do it. And it's not just for the sake of experimentation, either. Total physical memory Mb Mel G0GQK. G0GQK , Feb 7, Mel - The motherboard likely supports at least 1 GB of memory. For Windows XP, get as much memory as this older mother board can support -- will improve operational performance.

W9GB , Feb 7, I know free is a good price, but is it really? You've got to put money into the machine to make it work. Prices on parts that old are overinflated because they're all old stock and haven't been manufactured in years. The computers of that era are not at all efficient compared to a more modern design, plus all the components are aged.

You really should just buy a new rig, they're only a few hundred, which you're going to spend on parts anyway. If you are only using it for web browsing and such, maybe on the ram and a nice distro of Linux. Just a thought. K5PHW , Feb 7, Since it is an older motherboard and processor, the RAM will be cheap. Get the fastest and most RAM you can get in it. Xp will support up to 2gb of RAM. Do you have the Xp installation disk too?

If so; you might also consider re-installing the operating system on a new and faster hard drive. This will also help its speed considerably. If the video card is built onto the motherboard; them adding a dedicated video card will also speed up the computer.
